Early in January, Governor Ron DeSantis will name Marco Rubio’s Senate successor.
By early January, Florida may have its new U.S. Senator, according to Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. This comes after President-elect Donald Trump nominated Senator Marco Rubio to be Secretary of State. In accordance with state law and the U.S. Constitution, DeSantis will designate Rubio’s successor if the Senate confirms him.

DeSantis has already started gathering prospective candidates’ names and performing initial screening. He reported getting a lot of interest from people when he shared updates on social media. He intends to conduct in-depth interviews and assessments with potential applicants over the next few weeks.
Potential Candidates for the Senate Position
DeSantis is being urged by a number of Florida Republicans to give Lara Trump consideration for the role. Lara, who lives in Palm Beach County and is married to Eric Trump, is the co-chair of the Republican National Committee. On social media, Senator Rick Scott of Florida has openly endorsed her. While she hasn’t been called yet, Lara Trump said in a recent Fox News interview that she is honored to be considered for a different role and would take the possibility seriously if it were presented to her.
Governor’s Selection Criteria
On X (previously Twitter), Governor de santis laid out his requirements for the replacement senator, stressing the need of finding someone who will support President Trump’s policies. The ideal applicant should have a track record of success, challenge bureaucratic systems, solve financial concerns, adhere to conservative ideals, and concentrate on immigration and border security.
According to political commentators, DeSantis’ bond with Trump’s fans may be strengthened by appointing a member of his family, which might help his own political goals.
Other Possible Applicants
In addition to Lara Trump, former House Speaker Paul Renner, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez are also being considered. Each has special qualifications to offer. Rubio’s successor would hold the position until 2026, when it will be up for grabs in the following normal election cycle, if Rubio is confirmed as Secretary of State.
With this selection, DeSantis has the opportunity to align Florida‘s representation in Washington with the national Republican agenda.
